The Choices You Make Today, Impact Your Choices Tomorrow…

choices2

Sounds simple, seems so obvious and makes perfect sense. So why is it so difficult for humans to consistently make better choices today, that impact your choices tomorrow, that lead to successful outcomes – lasting  joy, and true peace?

As a dad of four awesome young men, one of my greatest desires is to be an effective leader,menIMG_0609tor and coach to each one according to their unique wiring.  The hope and anticipated outcome is that my kids will make wise choices (most of the time) and thereby avoid some of the collateral damage I have endured as a result of my poor choices. Outside of God’s Divine providence over our lives, my choices are influenced by decisions I’ve made, and the ripple effect influenced the decisions my kids make, which in turn impact their choices…

As loving, intentional parents, we strive to be positive role models for our children and pray that they will carry it forward to future generations – to be productive and world-impacting citizens. That they will pursue their dreams, fulling utilizing their God given gifts, talents and passions to become the very best they can be and manifesting their true potential…Isn’t that the hope of every parent?

I remember a PSA television advertisement a long time ago featuring a dad and his young son sitting by a tree, just hanging out enjoying a beautiful day together, a quality bonding moment. Just then the dad pulls out a cigarette, lights up and sets the pack down in between him and his son. Well you can guess what happens next – yes, the little boy – not more that 6-7 years old – mimics his dad. If I recall correctly, the slogan read, “Like Father, Like Son”. This is such a powerful cliche because it is so true, isn’t it? How about, “what you do speaks so loudly I can’t hear what your saying”…or, “actions speak louder than words”. Our decisions today, determine our choices tomorrow and influence the direction of others around you.

Father Son Christian Stock PhotoI’m fortunate to have had such a positive role model in my father here on earth and later in life was acquainted with the ultimate role model, our Father in heaven – who became a man in the person of Jesus Christ. My dad taught me so much simply by the way he lived a life of integrity, joyfulness, unconditional love and humility. Thanks Dad! Although my life has not been a mirror reflection of these character traits, my dad’s decisions impacted his choices, which influenced his families choices and ultimately had a significant influence on me and shaped my life in ways that are still being revealed. And, influencing future generations.

So what’s the point? Be aware, be mindful and be sure the decisions you make today are leading you and others around you in a direction that doesn’t limit choices and leads to the legacy you desire – for generations to come. One key element though that is critical to remember and worth stating here, it’s from the ashes of bad decisions that good character is often forged. Major disclaimer…So long as these errors in judgement are not repeated and that the student of adversity passes along their wisdom.

Struggling with making better decisions or mired in indecision – both of which can severely impact your family and work life. Maybe you’re on the cusp of making a really bad decision that is going to ripple in so many directions you can’t even see the damage one decision can produce.  Perhaps it’s time to map out a personal decision grid that can help you adjust your decision making process and get you on a new path.
